The Voice of Transformation: Community Choir as a Seed of Change

Discover the voices rewriting the future of children and youth in Valle de Bravo.

In Mexico, only 23% of public primary schools offer regular arts programs (INEGI, 2022). This figure drops significantly in rural communities, where access to arts education—recognized as a fundamental right for children’s holistic development (Article 31, Convention on the Rights of the Child, United Nations)—remains a privilege.

In Valle de Bravo, where 68% of rural schools lack systematic music education, we’ve established community choirs that transform how children and youth develop their potential and exercise their voices—which are far more than instruments. This tool for personal expression, vehicle for cultural identity and bridge for social transformation has generated a resounding impact:

  • 403 participating students from La Huerta San Agustín, Mesa Rica, and El Manzano
  • 283 voices in the Community Choir
  • 98 instrumentalists (86 guitar, 12 ukulele)
  • Increased female participation in musical instrument performance

These numbers represent concrete stories that give life to a whole collective that discovered in music a way to honour their roots while building new narratives and exercising fundamental rights: to play, to cultural participation, to creative development.
The Community Choir fosters active listening, perseverance, discipline, and critical thinking—connecting members to the world through collective expression.
